Preventative care for every age

At Eramosa Family Medical Centre, we are committed to supporting men’s health at every stage of life. From routine check-ups to specialized screenings, our dedicated team of doctors and allied health professionals is here to help you lead a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Teens and Young Adults

The teenage years and early adulthood can bring unique challenges, including stress and mental health concerns. If you or your child are struggling with stress, our GPs are available to discuss options, including referrals to our on-site psychologists for counseling support.

We offer assistance with:

  • Mental Health: Eligible patients may access a Mental Health Care Plan, providing Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual and 10 group sessions with allied mental health professionals per year. Ask your doctor for details.
  • Risk Behaviors: Excessive alcohol use and binge drinking are on the rise among young adults. Warning signs to watch for include withdrawal from friends, difficulty getting out of bed, or missing school. Our team can provide guidance and support for tackling substance use, including alcohol and illicit drugs.

Ages 20s to 50s

As men move through their 20s, 30s, and 40s, maintaining health becomes key to preventing future issues. At Eramosa Family Medical Centre, we offer:

  • Weight Management: Our GPs can advise on preventing weight gain and reducing the risk of diabetes. We work with dietitians to provide tailored nutrition advice for those at risk.
  • Heart Health: If you have a family history of heart disease, we can assess your risk and refer you to a cardiologist for specialized care.
  • Exercise Guidance: Regular physical activity boosts mental and physical health. If you’re new to exercise or have health concerns, consult your doctor before starting.
  • Sexual Health: We provide discreet sexual health screenings, including blood and urine tests for STIs like Chlamydia, which may have no symptoms. Book an appointment if it’s been a while since your last check-up.
  • Vasectomy Information: Considering a vasectomy? Our GPs can explain the procedure—a safe, effective day surgery under general anesthetic—and provide referrals to trusted specialists. Public options are available at local hospitals, or private options with insurance.
  • Skin Checks: Annual skin checks are recommended to monitor for changes. Visit our Skin Cancer page for more details on mole scanning and screening.
  • Family History Review: Preventative care is a priority. We’ll review your family medical history to identify and address potential risks early.

Age 50 and Beyond

For men over 50, regular health monitoring is essential. At Eramosa Family Medical Centre, we encourage:

  • Annual Health Checks: After your first visit, we’ll add you to our recall system for yearly check-ups. We often recommend a blood test before your consultation to assess key health markers.
  • Prostate Health: Prostate cancer affects around 17,000 Australian men each year, with higher risks if a close relative was diagnosed young. Symptoms include difficulty urinating, frequent urination, or incontinence. We offer PSA blood tests or physical exams annually from age 50, with follow-up steps like biopsies if needed.
  • Bowel Cancer Screening: Men aged 50-74 can join the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program, which provides a free fecal test by mail. If you have a family history of bowel cancer, ask about colonoscopy referrals.
  • Senior Wellness: We support older men with conditions like arthritis, early dementia, or mental health challenges. Your GP may suggest social activities, such as joining a local Men’s Shed, to stay connected and active.
